Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids essential to human health. They play a role in cell membrane integrity, immune and inflammation regulation, cognition and neuromuscular function. As the human body cannot make these fatty acids, they need to be obtained through diet or supplementation. Regarding skeletal muscle, recent research showed that n-3PUFAs may increase the uptake of amino acids by increasing the membrane fluidity in the muscle, and by activating pathways that inhibit protein breakdown. This led to the hypothesis that n-3PUFAs may enhance muscle mass gain and strength. This systematic review sought to gather all available evidence about the impact of n-3PUFA supplementation on muscle mass, strength, and function in healthy young and older adults. The review included 14 studies with a total of 1443 participants. The authors found that n-3PUFA supplementation had no significant effect on muscle mass or muscle function in healthy young and older adults, however, a very small but significant positive effect was noted regarding muscle strength. In the discussion section, the authors explain the challenges of their review and how these findings integrate with the current understanding and other research findings. They concluded more research is needed to get a better insight into the effects of n-3PUFA on muscle function and the variants.
Abstract
The effects of omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) supplementation on skeletal muscle are currently unclear. The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize all available evidence regarding the influence of n-3PUFA supplementation on muscle mass, strength, and function in healthy young and older adults. Four databases were searched (Medline, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, and SportDiscus). Predefined eligibility criteria were determined according to Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcomes, and Study Design. Only peer-reviewed studies were included. The Cochrane RoB2 Tool and the NutriGrade approach were used to access risk of bias and certainty in evidence. Effect sizes were calculated using pre-post scores and analyzed using a three-level, random-effects meta-analysis. When sufficient studies were available, subanalyses were performed in the muscle mass, strength, and function outcomes according to participant's age (<60 or ≥60 years), supplementation dosage (<2 or ≥2 g/day), and training intervention ("resistance training" vs. "none or other"). Overall, 14 individual studies were included, total 1443 participants (913 females; 520 males) and 52 outcomes measures. Studies had high overall risk of bias and consideration of all NutriGrade elements resulted in a certainty assessment of moderate meta-evidence for all outcomes. n-3PUFA supplementation had no significant effect on muscle mass (standard mean difference [SMD] = 0.07 [95% CI: -0.02, 0.17], P = 0.11) and muscle function (SMD = 0.03 [95% CI: -0.09, 0.15], P = 0.58), but it showed a very small albeit significant positive effect on muscle strength (SMD = 0.12 [95% CI: 0.006, 0.24], P = 0.04) in participants when compared with placebo. Subgroup analyses showed that age, supplementation dose, or cosupplementation alongside resistance training did not influence these responses. In conclusion, our analyses indicated that n-3PUFA supplementation may lead to very small increases in muscle strength but did not impact muscle mass and function in healthy young and older adults. To our knowledge, this is the first review and meta-analysis investigating whether n-3PUFA supplementation can lead to increases in muscle strength, mass, and function in healthy adults. Sarcopenia is a progressive skeletal muscle disorder involving accelerated loss of muscle mass, strength and function. It generally occurs in older age groups but can also be seen in younger people. Multiple factors contribute to the development of the condition. Besides nutritional management strategies, probiotics have recently caught the interest of researchers. As probiotics promote metabolic building activity, aid digestion and absorption and reduce muscle breakdown by favourably managing inflammation, they present great potential for the management of sarcopenia. This systematic review and meta-analysis explored the impact of probiotic supplementation on muscle mass, total lean mass and muscle strength in human adults. The review included 24 studies, with probiotics mainly from the Bifidobacteria or Lactobacilli family. The analysis concluded that probiotic supplementation improved muscle mass in comparison to placebos. It also significantly increased overall muscle strength in 6 randomized controlled trials, which was most obvious in age groups of 50 and above. However, no changes were seen concerning total lean mass. It appeared that longer studies, of >12 weeks or more, showed better outcomes in this review. Furthermore, Bifidobacteria species seemed to exhibit more favourable effects, and the authors also noted the beneficial results were more significant in Asian populations. Further research is needed to understand more about the underlying mechanism, best probiotics strains and the specifics of different demographic groups. This article yields a concise overview of sarcopenia, the nutritional aspects of the disease and how probiotics may be beneficial in disease management, strengthened with data from the review.

Introduction
This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effect of probiotics on muscle mass, total lean mass and muscle strength in both young and older adults.
Methods
- The search encompassed PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases, from inception up to June 2022; studies included spanned a period from 2013 to June 2022.
- The study adhered to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guidelines and included the Risk-of-Bias tool to assess study quality.

Abstract
Probiotics have shown potential to counteract sarcopenia, although the extent to which they can influence domains of sarcopenia such as muscle mass and strength in humans is unclear. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to explore the impact of probiotic supplementation on muscle mass, total lean mass and muscle strength in human adults. A literature search of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted through PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library from inception until June 2022. Eligible RCTs compared the effect of probiotic supplementation versus placebo on muscle and total lean mass and global muscle strength (composite score of all muscle strength outcomes) in adults (>18 years). To evaluate the differences between groups, a meta-analysis was conducted using the random effects inverse-variance model by utilizing standardized mean differences. Twenty-four studies were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis exploring the effects of probiotics on muscle mass, total lean mass and global muscle strength. Our main analysis (k = 10) revealed that muscle mass was improved following probiotics compared with placebo (SMD: 0.42, 95% CI: 0.10-0.74, I2 = 57%, P = 0.009), although no changes were revealed in relation to total lean mass (k = 12; SMD: -0.03, 95% CI: -0.19 - 0.13, I2 = 0%, P = 0.69). Interestingly, a significant increase in global muscle strength was also observed among six RCTs (SMD: 0.69, 95% CI: 0.33-1.06, I2 = 64%, P = 0.0002). Probiotic supplementation enhances both muscle mass and global muscle strength; however, no beneficial effects were observed in total lean mass. Investigating the physiological mechanisms underpinning different ageing groups and elucidating appropriate probiotic strains for optimal gains in muscle mass and strength are warranted.

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) forms the cornerstone in the treatment of localised high-risk, locally advanced, and metastatic prostate cancer (PCa). The hypothesis of this study was that protein supplementation augments the benefits of prolonged resistance exercise training to attenuate the decline in muscle mass, reduce fat mass accrual, and increase strength and physical performance in PCa patients on ADT. This study is a multicentre partly randomised controlled trial, comparing two intervention groups with a separately recruited control group. One hundred and twenty-six patients were included, and ninety-six patients finished the study. Results show that 20 week of resistance exercise training was feasible, safe, and well tolerated, and effectively counteracted the negative effect of ADT treatment on body composition, muscle mass, leg strength, and aerobic capacity in men with advanced PCa. Protein supplementation did not further augment the benefits of resistance exercise training. Authors conclude that protein supplementation is not required to further augment gains in muscle mass and strength after resistance exercise training in PCa patients who habitually consume ample protein.
Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the effects of 20 wk resistance exercise training with or without protein supplementation on body composition, muscle mass, muscle strength, physical performance, and aerobic capacity in prostate cancer patients receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). METHODS Sixty prostate cancer patients receiving ADT were randomly assigned to perform 20 wk of resistance exercise training with supplementation of 31 g whey protein (EX + PRO, n = 30) or placebo (EX + PLA, n = 30), consumed immediately after exercise and every night before sleep. A separate control group (CON, n = 36) only received usual care. At baseline and after 20 wk, body composition (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), muscle mass (computed tomography scan), muscle strength (1-repetition maximum strength tests), physical performance (Timed Up and Go Test, 30-Second Chair Stand Test, and Stair Climb Test), aerobic capacity (cardiopulmonary exercise test), and habitual dietary intake (food diary) were assessed. Data were analyzed using a two-factor repeated-measures ANOVA. RESULTS Over time, muscle mass and strength increased in EX + PRO and EX + PLA and decreased in CON. Total fat mass and fat percentage increased in EX + PRO and CON, but not in EX + PLA. Physical performance did not significantly change over time in either group. Aerobic capacity was maintained in EX + PLA, but it decreased in EX + PRO and CON. Habitual protein intake (without supplements) averaged >1.0 g·kg body weight -1 ·d -1 , with no differences over time or between groups. CONCLUSIONS In prostate cancer patients, resistance exercise training counteracts the adverse effects of ADT on body composition, muscle mass, muscle strength, and aerobic capacity, with no additional benefits of protein supplementation.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is the terminal stage of heart disease and in recent years, the prevalence of CHF has been increasing among the elderly. Studies have demonstrated that the incidence rate of malnutrition among elderly patients with stable CHF is relatively high. Thus, how to help elderly CHF patients based at home to effectively carry out nutritional self-management and prevent the occurrence of malnutrition, has become a major focus of medical research. The aim of this study was to test the effect of home-based nutritional intervention method on improving the nutritional status of elderly patients with CHF. This study is a randomised controlled trial that enrolled a total of 90 elderly patients with stable CHF. The patients were randomly divided into the experimental group and the control group. Results show that home-based food exchange nutritional interventions can effectively improve the malnutrition status as well as the cardiopulmonary function and exercise tolerance of elderly patients with CHF. Furthermore, after two months of intervention, the protein content and skeletal muscle mass were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group, while the reduction in body fat and body fat rate was also significantly higher in the former than in the latter. Authors conclude that the food exchange method is easy to grasp, operate and master, and is highly suitable for home-based elderly CHF patients.
Abstract
BACKGROUND The home treatment of elderly patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) is often accompanied by malnutrition, which increases the risk of re-hospitalisation and affects the prognosis. Therefore, how to effectively improve the nutritional self-management of patients is a current focus of medical research. This study aims to test the effect of home-based nutritional intervention method on improving the nutritional status of elderly patients with CHF. METHODS A total of 90 hospitalised elderly patients with CHF were randomly divided into the experimental group (n = 45) and the control group (n = 45). The patients in both groups were given standardised drug therapy and their nutritional status was evaluated using a body composition analyser prior to discharge (protein, body fat percentage, visceral fat area, skeletal muscle, upper arm muscle circumference, left lower limb and right lower limb muscle mass), with the cardiopulmonary function evaluated using a six-minute walk test and the metabolic equivalents method. The control group was given general nutrition education and routine dietary guidance from cardiac rehabilitation nurses, while the experimental group was given an individualised nutrition prescription by dietitians based on the evaluation results, according to which one-to-one food exchange dietary intervention training was given until the patients mastered the process. RESULTS The nutritional indexes at the end of the study were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group and were higher than those before the intervention (P < 0.05). The muscle circumference of the upper arm, the muscle mass of the left lower limb and the right lower limb had no statistical significance following the intervention compared to the control group and before the intervention (P > 0.05). The cardiopulmonary function indexes were significantly better in the experimental group at the end of the study than before the intervention and were better than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05), while no significant changes were observed in the control group before and after the intervention (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION The home-based nutritional intervention method of food exchange portions can effectively improve the nutritional status of elderly patients with CHF, with the distribution of visceral fat more reasonable and the cardiopulmonary function and exercise endurance improved.

Ageing is accompanied by a progressive decline in muscle mass and functionality, associated with an increased likelihood of adverse outcomes including falls, fractures, physical disability and mortality, possibly leading to a clinical syndrome known as sarcopenia. Among the causes of sarcopenia, motoneuron and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) degeneration have been proposed as key determinants. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 2-year multimodal training intervention involving aerobic, strength and balance exercises on muscle mass and function, motoneuronal and NMJ health in a population of older individuals classified as sarcopenic. This study was a randomised controlled trial which enrolled 45 sarcopenic participants (34 females and 11 males) who were randomly assigned to one of the two groups: intervention or control group. Results show that the 2-year multimodal training intervention seemingly preserved NMJ stability, preventing serum C-terminal agrin fragment (CAF) [a biomarker of muscle wasting and weakness] concentration rise in the intervention group, although this biomarker increased significantly only in the control group. Conversely, neurofilament light chain (NfL) [clinical biomarker of many neurodegenerative diseases] concentration did not change in either group. Finally, improvements of physical performance were correlated with changes of serum biomarkers of NMJ stability. Authors conclude that a 2-year multimodal training intervention including aerobic, strength and balance exercises is effective for preventing CAF concentration increments, suggesting a positive effect on NMJ stability.
Abstract
BACKGROUND Ageing is accompanied by a progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength, potentially determining the insurgence of sarcopenia. Evidence suggests that motoneuron and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) degeneration contribute to sarcopenia pathogenesis. Seeking for strategies able to slow down sarcopenia insurgence and progression, we investigated whether a 2-year mixed-model training involving aerobic, strength and balance exercises would be effective for improving or preserving motoneuronal health and NMJ stability, together with muscle mass, strength and functionality in an old, sarcopenic population. METHODS Forty-five sarcopenic elderly (34 females; 11 males) with low dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) lean mass and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score <9 were randomly assigned to either a control group [Healthy Aging Lifestyle Education (HALE), n = 21] or an intervention group [MultiComponent Intervention (MCI), n = 24]. MCI trained three times per week for 2 years with a mix of aerobic, strength and balance exercises matched with nutritional advice. Before and after the intervention, ultrasound scans of the vastus lateralis (VL), SPPB and a blood sample were obtained. VL architecture [pennation angle (PA) and fascicle length (Lf)] and cross-sectional area (CSA) were measured. As biomarkers of neuronal health and NMJ stability status, neurofilament light chain (NfL) and C-terminal agrin fragment (CAF) concentrations were measured in serum. Differences in ultrasound parameters, NfL and CAF concentration and physical performance between baseline and follow-up were tested with mixed ANOVA or Wilcoxon test. The relationship between changes in physical performance and NfL or CAF concentration was assessed through correlation analyses. RESULTS At follow-up, MCI showed preserved VL architecture (PA, Lf) despite a reduced CSA (-8.4%, P < 0.001), accompanied by maintained CAF concentration and ameliorated overall SPPB performance (P = 0.007). Conversely, HALE showed 12.7% decrease in muscle CSA (P < 0.001), together with 5.1% and 5.5% reduction in PA and Lf (P < 0.001 and P = 0.001, respectively), and a 6.2% increase in CAF (P = 0.009) but improved SPPB balance score (P = 0.007). NfL concentration did not change in either group. In the population, negative correlations between changes in CAF concentration and SPPB total score were found (P = 0.047), whereas no correlation between NfL and SPPB variations was observed. CONCLUSIONS The present findings suggest that our 2-year mixed aerobic, strength and balance training seemed effective for preventing the age and sarcopenia-related increases in CAF concentration, preserving NMJ stability as well as muscle structure (PA and Lf) and improving physical performance in sarcopenic older individuals.

Loss of muscle mass is an common consequence of aging. This can lead to frailty, osteoporosis and loss of physical function, diminishing the quality of life of older individuals. Adequate nutrition, including sufficient energy and protein intakes as well as exercise, can help slow the rate of muscle decline. The main aim of this study was to investigate whether protein intake at a single meal could meet or exceed the recommended per meal protein intake for community dwelling older persons to maintain muscle mass and function. This study is randomised, two-period, within subjects' crossover design trial. One hundred and nine community-dwelling male and female participants aged ≥60 years were enrolled in the study (52 for meat-derived meal treatment; 57 for plant-derived/vegetarian meal treatment. Results show that it is feasible to achieve protein intakes of ≥30 g/meal and 0.4 g/kg body weight/meal in community-dwelling older adults using high-quality meat-based foods that are easy to chew and swallow. Additionally, achieving this high level of protein intake from plant sources was more difficult and thus a selection of foods very high in protein density or fortified with complete protein would be required. Authors conclude that culinary spices can improve flavour intensity and liking of protein-rich foods, but do not necessarily improve protein intake.
Abstract
Insufficient protein intake is a common challenge among older adults, leading to loss of muscle mass, decreased function and reduced quality of life. A protein intake of 0.4 g/kg body weight/meal is recommended to help prevent muscle loss. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the protein intake of 0.4 g/kg body weight/meal could be achieved with typical foods and whether culinary spices could enhance protein intake. A lunch meal test was conducted in 100 community-dwelling volunteers; 50 were served a meat entrée and 50 were served a vegetarian entrée with or without added culinary spices. Food consumption, liking and perceived flavor intensity were assessed using a randomized, two-period, within subjects crossover design. Within the meat or vegetarian treatments, there were no differences in entrée or meal intakes between spiced and non-spiced meals. Participants fed meat consumed 0.41 g protein/kg body weight/meal, while the vegetarian intake was 0.25 g protein/kg body weight/meal. The addition of spice to the vegetarian entrée significantly increased liking and flavor intensity of both the entrée and the entire meal, while spice addition only increased flavor for the meat offering. Culinary spices may be a useful tool to improve the liking and flavor of high-quality protein sources among older adults, especially when used with plant-based foods, although improving liking and flavor alone are insufficient to increase protein intake.

The aim of this study was to assess which nutrition and exercise interventions are most effective for improving the body composition (fat mass and muscle mass), body mass index, and waist circumference in persons with overweight or obesity near retirement age (55 to 70 years of age). This study was a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomised controlled trials of sixty-six studies. Results of the NMA showed that the most effective strategy to improve body composition, i.e., losing fat without increasing risk of sarcopenia in persons with obesity around retirement age, was combining energy restriction with resistance training or with mixed exercise (resistance combined with aerobic exercise) and/or high-protein intake. In fact, without training, an energy-restricted diet with or without added protein helped individuals lose fat mass but also tended to result in losses of muscle mass. Authors conclude that an energy-restricted diet alone probably contributes to the development of sarcopenic obesity in persons of retirement age. Thus, to simultaneously lose weight and maintain muscle mass, authors recommend a combination of energy restriction and resistance training.
Abstract
The retirement phase is an opportunity to integrate healthy (nutrition/exercise) habits into daily life. We conducted this systematic review to assess which nutrition and exercise interventions most effectively improve body composition (fat/muscle mass), body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) in persons with obesity/overweight near retirement age (ages 55-70 y). We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomized controlled trials, searching 4 databases from their inception up to July 12, 2022. The NMA was based on a random effects model, pooled mean differences, standardized mean differences, their 95% confidence intervals, and correlations with multi-arm studies. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were also conducted. Ninety-two studies were included, 66 of which with 4957 participants could be used for the NMA. Identified interventions were clustered into 12 groups: no intervention, energy restriction (i.e., 500-1000 kcal), energy restriction plus high-protein intake (1.1-1.7 g/kg/body weight), intermittent fasting, mixed exercise (aerobic and resistance), resistance training, aerobic training, high protein plus resistance training, energy restriction plus high protein plus exercise, energy restriction plus resistance training, energy restriction plus aerobic training, and energy restriction plus mixed exercise. Intervention durations ranged from 8 wk to 6 mo. Body fat was reduced with energy restriction plus any exercise or plus high-protein intake. Energy restriction alone was less effective and tended to decrease muscle mass. Muscle mass was only significantly increased with mixed exercise. All other interventions including exercise effectively preserved muscle mass. A BMI and/or WC decrease was achieved with all interventions except aerobic training/resistance training alone or resistance training plus high protein. Overall, the most effective strategy for nearly all outcomes was combining energy restriction with resistance training or mixed exercise and high protein. Health care professionals involved in the management of persons with obesity need to be aware that an energy-restricted diet alone may contribute to sarcopenic obesity in persons near retirement age. Cancer anorexia–cachexia syndrome (CACS) is usually found in advanced cancer patients. CACS is a multifactorial process which comprises skeletal muscle and adipose tissue loss which may be compounded by anorexia and a dysregulated metabolic state. The hypothesis of this study was that curcumin will increase body compositions and body weight in patients with solid malignancy and CACS when compared to placebo after adjusting by age, gender, primary site of cancer, stage of cancer, performance status, and supplementary nutrition support. This study was a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomised phase lla study. A total of 46 patients were enrolled, of whom 33 underwent 1:1 block of four randomisations. Seventeen patients were randomly assigned to receive curcumin at dose of 800 mg twice daily orally and sixteen patients were randomly assigned to received placebo. Results show that curcumin supplementation: (1) did not statistically significantly improve body compositions and body weight when compared to placebo; (2) may cause clinical benefit in term of hand grip muscle strength and slow progress of CACS by decreasing in basal metabolic rate and preventing the decline in serum albumin; and (3) administered orally for two months at a dose of up to 2 grams daily appeared safe and no serious adverse events were reported. Authors conclude that curcumin inhibited process of CACS via reduction of basal metabolic rate and slowed down the progression of hand-grip muscle strength loss. Furthermore, nuclear factor kappa B [regulator of gene expression] levels merit further exploration as potentially suitable predictive biomarker for CACS treatment with curcumin.
Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aim to investigate the effect of curcumin on preventing cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome (CACS) via through mechanism of inhibition on NF-kB signal pathway. Outcome measurement for primary end point was improvement of body tissue composition, and the secondary end points were body weight and body mass index, hand grip muscle strengthening, and safety. METHODS This is randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase ll a study, 33 patients with CACS in solid malignancy were enrolled and randomized in 1:1 to receive oral curcumin (at a dose of 800 mg twice daily) or placebo for 8 weeks. RESULTS All parameters of body compositions were not statistically significant different between two groups, which were consist body fat mass [-1.25(SEM 0.87) vs. +0.63(SEM 0.55); p=0.119], skeletal muscle mass [-0.35(SEM 0.60) vs.+0.33(SEM 0.42); p=0.408] and percent body fat [-0.47(SEM 0.95) vs. -0.29(SEM 0.82); p=0.893] including with basal metabolic rate [-13.47(SEM 21.94) vs. +15.30(13.76); p=0.336]. The average of weight loss was also not statistically significant different between two groups. [-1.4 kg(SEM 0.89) in curcumin vs-1.12 kg(SEM 0.73), p=0.810]. Notably, patient with curcumin had less reduction of hand-grip muscle strength on both hands [Rt. handed: -2.47 in curcumin vs. -5.36 in placebo; p=0.318] [Lt. handed: -1.98 vs. -5.43; p=0.317], and basal metabolic rate than placebo group. Most adverse events were grade 1 on both groups similarly. CONCLUSION Curcumin was not shown to be superior to placebo with regard to increasing the body composition in cancer patients with CACS. However, curcumin might show some clinical benefits, including slow progression of hand-grip muscle strength loss, and basal metabolic rate. Further investigations should be explored.

Phthalates are widely used chemicals to improve the utility of plastics and personal care products. Phthalates can be classified as high-molecular-weight phthalates and low-molecular-weight phthalates. The aim of this study was to clarify whether prenatal and postnatal exposures to phthalates are associated with physical growth as measured by body composition indices in children. This study is a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of 39 studies about the association of phthalates with body composition indices among children. Results showed that prenatal exposure to phthalates is significantly associated with low body mass index in children, but not with body fat mass. In addition, prenatal phthalate exposure may affect the disturbance of normal growth of children rather than act as an obesogen. Authors conclude that it is necessary to administer stricter and broader regulations on phthalates in living environments.
Abstract
Phthalates are well-known endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Many detrimental health effects of phthalates were investigated, but studies on the association of phthalates with obesity in children showed inconsistent results. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to clarify whether prenatal and postnatal exposures to phthalates are associated with physical growth disturbances in children. We performed the systematic review and meta-analysis following the PRISMA 2020 statement guidelines, and found 39 studies that met our inclusion criteria, including 22 longitudinal and 17 cross-sectional studies. We observed a significant negative association between the prenatal exposure to DEHP and the body mass index (BMI) z-score of the offspring (β = - 0.05; 95% CI: - 0.10, - 0.001) in the meta-analysis, while no significant association between the prenatal exposure to DEHP and the body fat percentage of the offspring was observed (β = 0.01; 95% CI: - 0.41, 0.44). In the systematic review, studies on the association between phthalates exposure in childhood and obesity were inconsistent. Prenatal exposure to phthalates was found to be associated with decreased BMI z-score in children, but not associated with body fat percentage. Our findings suggest that phthalates disturb the normal muscle growth of children, rather than induce obesity, as previous studies have hypothesized.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of a ketogenic diet (KD) versus an unspecified standard diet (SD) on body composition and survival in HNC patients undergoing radio(chemo)therapy. This study is a controlled clinical trial. Results show that an individualized KD supplemented with essential amino acids consumed during curative radio(chemo)therapy of HNC patients was able to slow down the negative consequences of therapy on body composition to some extent. Authors conclude that further research of KDs in frail cancer patient populations is required which may help to motivate their implementation as complementary therapies for select patients.
Abstract
PURPOSE Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) are at risk of malnutrition, especially during radiochemotherapy. We aimed to study the impact of a ketogenic diet (KD) versus an unspecified standard diet (SD) on body composition and survival in HNC patients undergoing radio(chemo)therapy. METHODS As part of a controlled clinical trial, non-metastasized HNC patients were enrolled into either a KD (N = 11) or an SD (N = 21) group between May 2015 and May 2021. Body composition was measured weekly by bioimpedance analysis and analyzed using linear mixed effects models. Overall and progression-free survival was assessed during regular follow-up. RESULTS A total of 7 KD and 21 SD patients completed the study and were eligible for comparative analysis. Chemotherapy was significantly associated with declines in all body composition parameters, while the KD had opposing, yet nonsignificant effects. In patients receiving chemotherapy, average weekly reductions of body mass (BM) and skeletal muscle mass (SMM) were 0.9 kg and 0.31 kg in the KD group versus 1.2 kg and 0.57 kg in the SD group, respectively. Patients in the KD group receiving no chemotherapy achieved an average increase of 0.04 kg BM and 0.12 kg SMM per week. After a median follow-up of 42 months (range 6.7-78 months) there were no significant differences in progression-free or overall survival between the groups. CONCLUSION The KD may partially counteract the detrimental effects of radiochemotherapy on body composition in HNC patients. This should encourage further research into KDs in frail cancer patient populations and motivate their implementation as complementary therapy for selected patients.
